Relocation Guide Main Page - O'Hare Area Area Guide
The Town Of Elk Grove Village, Illinois is your source for information on Elk Grove Village. If your moving to Elk Grove Village or just visiting, you will find all kinds of information on real estate, schools, areas, parks, churches, crime, things to do, places to visit, local businesses, dining, and much more!Originally settled by New England farmers in 1834 and later by German immigrants in 1848, Elk Grove Village flourished along with the crops in its fields. Named for the herds of elk that called the local woodlands home, Elk Grove continued to grow to include commercial enterprises such as general stores, smithies, creameries, and churning houses. In 1868, the first school, Biesterfield School, was built; the building still stands today and is used as a private residence. In the early 1900’s, additional schools and churches rose from the rural landscape to service the area’s increasing population. In 1914, a forest preserve district was established to protect public lands for use by residents and for the generations to come. In the early 1940’s, the rural community became an industrial center with the building of a Douglas Aircraft manufacturing plant. When the war ended, the city of Chicago purchased the land and buildings for a $1 and later utilized the site for what has become the world’s busiest airport, O’Hare International. As the airport expanded in the 1950’s and 1960’s, so did its neighbor Elk Grove Village. In the 1950’s, Dallas-based developer Centex Corporation purchased 1500 acres and began building residential neighborhoods and industrial parks. In 1956, Elk Grove Village incorporated with 116 citizens and put into place a plan for controlled growth. During the past 40 years, the 1500 acres has almost quadrupled to 6,000 acres, accommodating more than 3,500 businesses and over 33,500 residents.

Elk Grove Village is ideally located for both businesses and families. Just 22 miles northwest of Chicago and minutes from O’Hare International Airport and a half dozen interstate highways, Elk Grove’s suburban locale offers residents and businesses easy access to the Windy City’s cultural events and transportation hubs, Midwest, national, and international markets, and neighboring suburbs.

Businesses ship and receive goods via more than 100 motor-freight carriers, air-freight handlers, daily-scheduled freight trains, and year-long barge service on Lake Michigan. In addition to traveling by car, residents enjoy worry-free travel and commuting on the Metra lines of the Chicago Northwestern and Milwaukee Road trains that connect the northwestern suburbs with Chicago’s Loop. Regional Transportation Authority buses, Senior Citizen Bus Service, and Pace Dial-A-Ride transport passengers around Elk Grove Village and to adjacent suburbs.

Elk Grove Village, covering 10 square miles northwest of Chicago in Cook and DuPage Counties, is indeed a great place to live, work, and own a business. Due to its high-quality park and recreation programs, low crime rate, good schools, diversity of housing, sense of community, and prime location, Elk Grove was named as one of the best places to live in America in the second edition of "50 Fabulous Places to Raise Your Family." With a population of 33,429 and more than 3,500 business enterprises, Elk Grove Village successfully blends a vibrant and growing commercial center with family-friendly neighborhoods, open green ways, parks, and forest preserves.

Demographics show that the residents of Elk Grove are well educated and enjoy higher-than-national average household earnings. Due to the large business base, they also enjoy one of the lowest property tax rates in metropolitan Chicago. With an eye on the future, Elk Grove Village works toward controlled growth by revitalizing its industrial centers so that businesses and residents enjoy the same prosperity and quality of life in the future as they do today.
