The Town Of Itasca, Illinois
ChicagoRelo.com is your source for information on Itasca. If your moving to Itasca or just visiting, you will find all kinds of information on real estate, schools, areas, parks, churches, crime, things to do, places to visit, local businesses, dining, and much more! The Village of Itasca is committed to providing its residents and corporate citizens a comfortable, safe and prosperous community in which to live and do business, and maintaining Itasca's unique quality of life.

That commitment extends to planning to extends to planning to allows for controlled, continued development and improvement of Itasca; preserving the Village's historic areas and supporting business involved in preservation and/or restoration efforts; and maintaining and supporting Itasca's culture, recreational and natural amenities.

The village strives to deliver municipal services in a professional manner through friendly and equitable service; be responsive to individual concerns while keeping in mind the goal of the entire community; and foster citizen involvement through active participation in the Village Boards and commissions and open lines of communication through meetings and forums. The Village Board continually evaluates programs and services based on citizen input and looks for ways to keep tax rates low while maintaining financial reserves to meet Itasca's present and future needs.

Ever since its founding, Itasca's community leaders have carefully planned for the Village's growth and development. Dr. Elijah Smith was the first to settle here, in 1841, and was instrumental in the community's early growth. In 1873, Dr. Smith granted the right-of-way across a portion of his 80 acres of land to the Chicago and Pacific Railroad, and donated $400 for the construction of a train station, to encourage the railroad to lay tracks through the settlement and thus put the community "on the map."

The Village incorporated in 1890. It remained a rural community until the late 1940s when the concept of "suburban living" became the American way of life. By 1996 the population had jumped to almost 7585 and annexations had added fifty miles of Village streets, more parks and two industrial areas to maintain.

Village leaders drew up a Comprehensive Village plan in 1942, amended in 1959, 1997, and 1993 to accommodate the growing community. A master plan was adopted in Itasca in 1965, and together with the Comprehensive Plan, continues to guide the Village today and into the future.

While looking to the future, Itasca has gone to great lengths to maintain its rich past. The Village created a Historical Commission in 1985 to retain the aesthetic beauty, character and historical integrity of its late 1800 and early 1900 homes, buildings, structures and places.

A $500,000 downtown historic district renovation project earned the Village the American Public Works Association Award in 1991. The project included providing grants to businesses to restoring historic structures or renovating newer buildings to reflect Itasca's pride in its rich past. The historic buildings and replica facades is a proud focal point of the Village.

So, too are Itasca's "green spaces." One of the only 22 original Tree Cities USA in 1985, the Village's beautification efforts are evident in its numerous community parks and hundreds of trees planted each year. Everything about the Village distinguishes Itasca as a quality community, one all its residents are proud to call home.
